No error message, simple JPEG (9KB), lets me choose it but then nothing happens.

Hmm, yes, I can't change mine. in the images directory there are up to three files for each user-ID: ID_avatar.jpg, which is the avatar image for the message-boards, set in your account's "Community Preferences"; ID.jpg which is the profile image, set under Profile->View in the account or in the "Profiles" link in the sidebar; and ID_sm.jpg, which is a miniature of the profile photo. There haven't been any changes in the directory since Aug 9th.
And I don't seem to be able to upload a new avatar file either. ...but directly copying it to the server worked...
