Hi all,

Until now all ATLAS tasks have been simulations of the ATLAS detector during "Run 2" of the LHC that ran from 2015 to 2018. Even 5 years later ATLAS physicists are still analysing the data from that period and require new simulations to be done. However last year "Run 3" of the LHC started and it will last until the end of 2025. Soon we will switch the ATLAS tasks here to Run 3 simulations, where many things have changed in the detector and the software used to simulate and analyse data.

Version 3.0.0 of the app allows us to run both Run 2 and Run 3 simulations in the same version during the transition period, however this does make the image for vbox a bit larger (4.4GB, or 1.8GB compressed). The Linux native app is the same as before with one very minor change to set an environment variable required by the new software.

The main benefit of the software used for Run 3 simulations is that it uses far less memory, less than 3GB for an 8-core task. At the moment we are not yet submitting Run 3 tasks here but we'll let you know when we start sending them.

Well David I wouldn't mind seeing A-Test running again......if I didn't have to run Linux

BAH

Last night I decided to use my older laptop to run a CMS along with my three 8-core desktops.
And when it finished (I usually watch but we were watching our great grandaughter)

And when it finished it d/l's this Atlas vdi and a task and it was right after the finished CMS which I had set to get no more CMS until later BUT that damn box was checked to get "accept work from other applications" which must be auto set by the server since I never ask for that.

So I get a just a one hour task and Credit 38.72.......all of this uses the last 2GB of my monthly high-speed internet so the last 2 days will be dropped down to a pitiful speed until the 12th and I pay over $160 per month for the internet that I use 90% for Cern and this is my 19th year

https://lhcathomedev.cern.ch/lhcathome-dev/result.php?resultid=3192052

So I hope this one Atlas task was worth all of that.
But that won't happen again and after 2am tonight I will have it run a CMS again and let anyone else run Atlas........well unless like I mentioned we do Atlas Alphas again on the other site just for Atlas test
no I am not asking for any help or advice or anything so.......
